The Christopher & Dana Reeve Paralysis Act (CDRPA) was introduced in the House of Representatives (H.R. 1727) and the Senate (S.1183) in March 2007. Please take a moment to write your members of congress and ask them to co-sponsor the Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Act.

I am writing to urge your support and co-sponsorship of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Paralysis Act (CDRPA), H.R.1727, S.1183.  This bi-partisan, comprehensive legislation focuses necessary attention on the research, rehabilitation, and quality of life needs for the more than 4 million Americans living with paralysis.  With your support, we will pick up where Christopher and Dana Reeve left off.  Emboldened by their determination, inspired by their courage, impassioned by their vision and in their honor, we will Go Forward.

Just consider this, the annual cost associated with disability is estimated at over $300 billion in medical care expenses and lost productivity (The Institute of Medicine's Enabling America).  The tenants of the legislation are in-line with the initiatives advanced by this Administration:  coordination, collaboration, and a reduction in research redundancies.  During financially difficult times, the CDRPA advances mechanisms to more efficiently spend current dollars. 

The CDRPA has three components:

     1.  Encourages mutli-disciplinary consortia style research through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) - connecting scientists doing similar work to enhance understanding and speed discovery of better treatments and cures.

     2.  Supports rehabilitation research to prevent secondary health conditions and promote restored function.

     3.  Builds quality of life programs throughout the country that will further advance full participation, independent living, self-sufficiency, and equality of opportunity for individuals with paralysis and other related mobility impairments through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

This legislation creates efficiencies and encourages sharing of information and research in order to help people living with paralysis to improve their lives.  That is not controversial.

Christopher Reeve once said, "I understand first-hand how terribly frightening it is to suddenly become paralyzed.  Being active one day and immobile the next thrusts you without warning into an entirely new existence.  The changes are enormous and overwhelming."

You can honor the lives of Christopher and Dana Reeve by signing on to the CDRPA (H.R.1727, S.1183) as a co-sponsor and by calling for passage.

With so much at stake, and so many people in need, this is the year to pass this critical legislation.  I look to your leadership to ensure this year Congress passes the Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Act, H.R.1727, S.1183.
