The newest member of the NeuroRecovery Network, Craig Hospital in Denver, Colorado is world renowned as a premier hospital for specialty rehabilitation and research for people with spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury.

“Craig” is a 93-bed, private, not-for-profit, free-standing long term acute care and rehabilitation hospital in the Denver area that provides a comprehensive system of inpatient and outpatient medical care, rehabilitation, neurosurgical rehabilitative care, and long-term follow up services. Half of Craig's patients come from outside of Colorado, and over the past four years Craig has treated patients from all 50 states and several foreign countries. At any given time, the staff at Craig treat approximately 50-55 inpatients with spinal cord injury, 25-30 with traumatic brain injury, and 50-60 outpatients. Craig provides housing for out-of-state families and outpatients, including the first 30 days free for families of new inpatients.

Craig Hospital is designated by the National Institute on Disability Rehabilitation and Research (NIDRR) as a Model System Center for both spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury. Craig is also the NIDRR National Statistical TBI database for the other model system centers (2011-16). Craig has been ranked in the Top Ten Rehabilitation Hospitals in the nation for 23 consecutive years by U.S. and World Report since the rankings began in 1990. Craig received the Magnet Recognition® 2005-2010 and 2010-2015 and the Magnet Prize® Award in 2012. In 2011 and 2013 Craig received the Top Rehab Hospital NDNQI® award for quality patient care. Craig is more than a hospital and has a remarkable atmosphere and culture that is casual but professional, active and upbeat.
Once you’ve been to Craig, you are part of the Craig family for life.

David Larkin

After suffering four days of progressing pain and visits to an ER and his doctor, David walked into a second ER on Dec 2, 2011. Twelve hours later, when he emerged from the MRI, he couldn’t move anything except his arms and head. It turns out he had spinal epidural abscesses from a staph infection which created pressure on his spinal cord causing a spinal stroke. After surgery and 24 days in the hospital, he was admitted to Craig Hospital barely able to wiggle his toes and move his arms on December 27, 2011.

During his 99 days as an inpatient at Craig, David regained movement in his legs and his arms began to grow stronger. Sessions with the FES bikes, mat training, using a standing frame, pool therapy and Locomotor training gave David hope and determination to want to walk again.

After his discharge in April 2012, David has maintained weekly outpatient treatment sessions, with mat work, pool therapy and Locomotor training. He also did Zero-G training and exercise in the Peak Center making slow, but steady progress. David began working with Craig’s new NRN team doing increased Locomotor training in December, 2012 and has made steady gains the past few months.

While David still needs assistance getting to a standing position, he can now walk several hundred feet at a time using a standard walker!

That is why he accepted the challenge to race with Craig Hospital's NRN team in support of Team Reeve in the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon relay in Louisville, KY on April 27, 2013.

When asked about this physically and mentally challenging test, David said, “As I train with Craig's new NRN team, I will not lose sight of why I am really putting myself through this. It is for more than just me. Walking a few hundred yards in a marathon relay is nothing compared to the "marathon" that those of us living with spinal cord injury face every day.”
“As I train during the cold winter days, the patients I met at Craig and Craig’s dedicated staff will be my inspiration; they will be the ‘fuel in my tank’ to get me to the finish line!”
