Johannesburg, South Africa

This grant will help to support the Adelaide Tambo Green School Project, which aims to improve the quality of life and education of mobility-impaired children at the Adelaide Tambo Learners with Special Education Needs (LSEN) School in the Gauteng Township of Soweto through a variety of environmental initiatives such as tree planting, vegetable gardening, environmental club (Green Club) development and activities, and the beautifying of the school grounds with appropriate plants and flowers for color and to attract birds and butterflies.  As children with physical disabilities get involved in gardening and environmental activities, they exercise muscles the otherwise would not use, they learn skills they otherwise would not learn and they are sensitized to the wonder of the environment, something they otherwise may not experience.  Grant funds support programmatic expenses.  This grant was funded through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Award #1U59DD000338).
