Center for Independence
This grant will help to fund a pilot program of four one-day emergency preparedness workshops where people with disabilities will gather to receive valuable information on communication and survival during emergency or disaster situations. Each participant will leave at the end of the session with an emergency kit designed to help him or her stay safe and comfortable during and after a disaster or emergency.
A special effort will be made to recruit people with disabilities related to spinal cord injuries to attend the workshops. The Center will coordinate the planning and presentation of the trainings with local fire, police, health and emergency management departments, as well as the local American Red Cross chapters. This grant was funded by a generous financial donation from Alseres Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a leader in the development of diagnostic and therapeutic products for central nervous system disorders and nerve repair, specifically in spinal cord injury.
