Statement by Peter Wilderotter
CEO of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation
On the Passing of United States Senator
Edward M. Kennedy

Senator Edward Kennedy with Christopher ReeveSHORT HILLS, N.J. (AUGUST 27, 2009) – The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation along with the entire nation mourns the death of Senator Edward M. Kennedy. Senator Kennedy was a champion and leader in defending the rights of those living with disabilities and providing funding for research and cures that improve the lives for all people. As a result of his sponsorship of the American with Disabilities Act, more Americans have access to public spaces and now have the tools to fight against discrimination that result from their disability. His early and consistent support of legislation for stem cell research and all research in general, we believe, will result in improved treatments and an eventual cure for spinal cord injuries. Senator Kennedy reached across party lines to improve healthcare, civil rights and education for all Americans. We encourage his colleagues in Congress to take up his standard and continue the fight.

Senator Kennedy had a long and warm friendship with our founders, Christopher and Dana Reeve, and his support of The Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Act was instrumental in its passage. We greatly appreciate all he did to improve the quality of life for all people and his visionary leadership will affect the lives of future generations of Americans. The Reeve Foundation extends our heartfelt condolences to his family, legislative colleagues and staff.
