Quality of Life Grants: 2nd Cycle 2008: Actively Achieving
Magee Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation
This grant will help to support the Wheelchair Sports Program, which over that past 20 years has involved more than 450 athletes in sports such as wheelchair rugby, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis, and wheelchair soccer. By participating in wheelchair sports, patients are more likely to improve their physical health, reduce complications related to secondary disabilities, improve their long-term health, improve their cognitive functioning, improve their mental health and well-being, and reduce overall health care costs. In addition, active involvement in the community through activities such as wheelchair sports positively impacts life satisfaction, supports high-quality social relationships, and decreases levels of depression. Grant funds will help to underwrite the purchase of 2 sports wheelchairs; one for rugby and one for basketball, as well as tournament registration fees. This grant was funded through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Award #1U59DD000338).
