Quality of Life Grants: 1st Cycle 2009: Actively Achieving

Keshet Dance Company
Albuquerque, NM

This grant will help to fund "Nutcracker on the Rocks," Keshet's original annual holiday performance which provides the opportunity for individuals with physical disabilities to fully experience the joy of dance. Dancers explore space—and their wheelchairs—in new ways, shattering their own preconceptions about what defines a dancer, as well as those of fellow cast members and audience members. The integration of so many levels and abilities—dancers with disabilities and able-bodied dancers, professionals and beginners of all shapes, ages and sizes—builds understanding and appreciation of diversity and fosters long-term mentoring relationships. "Nutcracker on the Rocks" was first conceived and produced in 1997 as an alternative to the classical holiday story. Grant funds will help support the salary of the choreographer and project director. This grant is funded through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Award #1U59DD000338).
