Quality of Life Grants: 1st Cycle 2009: Coping and Caring
William Beaumont Hospital
Royal Oak, MI
This grant will help to support the establishment of the Beaumont Alternative Car Restraint Rental Program, which will fit and provide crash-tested, government approved alternative child car restraints for children with congenital neurological disorders or spinal cord injury. A certified child passenger technician will, prior to their hospital discharge, screen all infants born with congenital conditions such as spina bifida, and children under eight years of age who experienced trauma resulting in spinal cord and/or head injuries, and fit them to an appropriate special needs car restraint. Families will have the use of a child restraint temporarily until they have completed the insurance approval process and have obtained an appropriate restraint through a medical supply company (six to eight weeks). Grant funds will help to underwrite the purchase of four Casco Dream Ride SE restraint systems with seat covers and three Britax Traveler Plus restraint systems with seat covers. This grant is funded through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Award #1U59DD000338).
