Quality of Life Grants: 2nd Cycle 2009: Bridging Barriers
Access 2 Independence of
the Eastern Iowa Corridor
Iowa City, IA
This Quality of Life grant will help to fund Empowering Rural Iowans and Veterans with Disabilities; a program that aims to empower individuals with disabilities with self-advocacy skills, to train the aid and attendants who care for them, to sensitize the community, and to educate employers about disabilities. Working with the University of Iowa Veterans' Center and other organizations, peer mentors will be identified and will attend the national conference of the Association of Programs for Rural Independent Living (APRIL) for training. Grant funds will help to underwrite the expenses for accessible van transportation, conference registration, and hotel accommodations for peer mentors. This grant was funded through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Award # 1U59DD000388).
