Quality of Life Grants: 1st Cycle 2010: Caring and Coping

Independent Living Resource Center San Francisco
San Francisco, CA

This grant will help to support the Building Bridges: Chinese and Latino Community Services Programs, through which multi-lingual, multi-cultural services are provided to San Francisco's Chinese and Latino consumers with disabilities while simultaneously advocating for full language access. Building Bridges staff work collaboratively with numerous community-based organizations (in Chinatown and The Mission District, among other areas) to encourage residents to utilize the wide array of information, support and advocacy services, which are available in both Chinese and Spanish. Building Bridges staff members, who are themselves members of the Chinese and Latino communities, are uniquely qualified to provide culturally appropriate information, support and advocacy regarding the independent living philosophy, disability rights, housing, benefits, work incentive programs, assistive technology, accessible transportation, transition/diversion (from institutional living to community living) services, medical and financial benefits and HMO rights. Grant funds will support programmatic expenses. This grant is funded through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Award # 1U59DD000338).
