Quality of Life Grants: 2nd Cycle 2010: Actively Achieving
Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital
This Quality of Life grant will help to support the Exercise for Persons with Disabilities Program (ExPD). The program is a hybrid approach for individuals with paraplegia, combining Functional Electronic Stimulation (F.E.S.) with rowing machine exercise. This full body exercise response enables unprecedented gains in cardiovascular fitness, bone mass and muscle mass for people with paraplegia caused by spinal cord injury and other paralyzing conditions. Because the Hybrid Exercise Program is considered exercise, rather than a clinical therapy, insurance coverage is not available. Grant funds will support scholarships to enable individuals with limited resources to participate. This grant is funded through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Award # 1U59DD000338).
