Quality of Life Grants: 2nd Cycle 2010: Actively Achieving

Spina Bifida Association of Texas
San Antonio, TX

This Quality of Life grant will support the Lunch Bunch, a monthly exercise and nutrition program for children with disabilities and their families. Children with physical disabilities are at a higher risk of obesity than other populations, due to a number of factors which include cerebral and or glandular irregularities, limited motor function, social isolation and depression. It is often a struggle for families to find physical activities that are geared towards their child's special needs. The children will be able to participate in physical activities geared toward individuals with physical limitations, and families learn healthy eating habits to help prevent obesity. Families are given information on events and activities in the community that promote physical and social interaction. Grant funds will support programmatic expenses. This grant is funded through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Award # 1U59DD000338).
