Quality of Life Grants: 1st Cycle 2011: Actively Achieving

Athletes Serving Athletes, Inc.
Baltimore, MD

This grant will help to support Wings for Wheels: Sports Mentoring Program for Youth with Disabilities. Youth with physical disabilities ages 7-17 who use wheelchairs for mobility (ASA athletes) will be matched with mentors (with or without a disability) who will train and compete with them in physical tandem through supportive devices such as customized racing chairs. The goal is for each young athlete to train, compete in, and experience the thrill of crossing the finish line in local running, cycling and triathlon events. Grant funds will help to underwrite the purchase of 3 sports wheelchairs. This grant is funded through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Award # 1U59DD000338.)
