Research |
The Reeve Foundation's research programs are developing and delivering treatments and cures for spinal cord injury. |
The Basics |
To cure the paralysis and loss of function that spinal cord injuries cause, doctors will need a series of carefully orchestrated interventions. Treatments are likely to start in the field, even before someone reaches the Emergency Room; continue for months; and include rigorous new forms of rehabilitation. |

How the Spinal Cord Works |
This tutorial is designed as an introduction for the lay person to spinal cord injury and repair. |
How Is the Central Nervous System Different from Other Systems of the Body? |
Most systems and organs of the body control just one function, but the central nervous system does many jobs at the same time. |
What is the Central Nervous System? |
The central nervous system (CNS) controls most functions of the body and mind. It consists of two parts: the brain and the spinal cord. |
How Does the Central Nervous System Protect Itself from Injury? |
The central nervous system is better protected than any other system or organ in the body. Its main line of defense is the bones of the skull and spinal column, which create a hard physical barrier to injury. |
Why Can't the Central Nervous System Repair Itself Following Injury? |
Many organs and tissues in the body can recover after injury without intervention. |
Neurons |
Cells called neurons connect with one another to send and receive messages in the brain and spinal cord. |
Astrocytes |
Astrocytes, a kind of glial cell, are the primary support cells of the brain and spinal cord. |
Oligodendrocytes |
Oligodendrocytes are glial cells that produce a fatty substance called myelin which wraps around axons in layers. |
Microglia |
Microglia are immune cells for the brain. |
Synapses and Neurotransmission |
Messages are passed from neuron to neuron through synapses, small gaps between the cells, with the help of chemicals called neurotransmitters. |
What Causes Paralysis |
Paralysis occurs when communication between the brain and spinal cord fails. |
The Information Pathways |
Specialized neurons carry messages from the skin, muscles, joints, and internal organs to the spinal cord about pain, temperature, touch, vibration, and proprioception. |
Voluntary and Involuntary Movement |
Over one million axons travel through the spinal cord, including the longest axons in the central nervous system. |
The Spinal Cord and Muscles Working Together |
The spinal cord is divided into five sections: the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal regions. The level of injury determines the extent of paralysis and/or loss of sensation. No two injuries are alike. |
What Happens Following a Spinal Cord Injury |
A common set of biological events take place following spinal cord injury |
The Spinal Cord and Internal Organs Working Together |
In addition to the control of voluntary movement, the central nervous system contains the sympathetic and parasympathetic pathways that control the "fight or flight" response to danger and regulation of bodily functions. |
Intervention Strategies |
The following are some of the intervention strategies supported by funding from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. This is not a comprehensive list of all possible interventions. |
Glossary of spinal cord terminology |
This glossary is designed to help you as you learn more about spinal repair research. You may want to bookmark this page for easy reference. |
History of spinal cord research |
Throughout most of scientific history, spinal cord injury and paralysis have been considered severe and irreversible conditions. |
Spinal Cord Atlas - Introduction and Mouse Spinal Cord |
Many hundreds of thousands suffer spinal cord injuries leading to loss of sensation and motor function in the body below the point of injury. |
Spinal Cord Atlas - Rat |
These are illustrations for rat spinal cord sections from The Spinal Cord, funded in part by an Individual Research Grant from the Reeve Foundation. It is the first comprehensive book on the anatomy of the mammalian spinal cord. |
Scientific Grants Programs |
Supports investigator-initiated research on a variety of fronts, including axon growth and guidance, remyelination, cellular replacement, rehabilitation, neuroprotection, and secondary complications following SCI (bowel, bladder, pain, etc.). |
Individual Research Grants |
The Reeve Foundation Individual Grants Program was founded on the understanding that effective treatments for acute and chronic spinal cord injury will involve carefully orchestrated multi-disciplinary interventions, each tailored to the individual patient. |
New Research Grants |
Mapping of synaptic connectivity between descending neurons and mammalian spinal interneurons using photostimulation and optical recording. |
Science Advisory Council |
The Science Advisory Council, comprised of senior neuroscientists who volunteer their time, is appointed by the Reeve Foundation and reports to the Research Planning Committee of the Board (RPC). |

Edgerton: Spinal controlled, Full-Weight Walking |
For the first time, rats with completely severed spinal cords were able to walk bipedally on a treadmill with a near normal gait while bearing their full weight. This research, funded in part by the Reeve Foundation, showed that the walking was facilitated not by restoring brain control but by tapping into circuitry in the spinal cord itself. |
