Competitive Bidding ConcernsIf you have been negatively impacted by the Program, we encourage you to share your story. With your help, we can work together to ensure that people living with spinal cord injuries and paralysis have access to the quality care and equipment they deserve. If you wish to express your concerns directly to CMS, or if you have additional questions concerning the Medicare Bidding Program, you are encouraged to call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). About the Medicare Competitive Bidding Program Wherever competitive bidding goes into effect, Medicare will only make payments to a limited number of suppliers that have been selected by HHS. As a result, individuals living with spinal cord injury and paralysis are likely to have fewer suppliers to choose from for both purchase and repairs of wheelchairs and other durable medical equipment. Some individuals will be forced to give up their existing suppliers, and many will be required to travel greater distances to access a supplier that has been selected by HHS. The controversial bidding system took effect on January 1, 2011 in nine metropolitan areas, including: Charlotte, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Kansas City, Miami, Orlando, Pittsburgh, and Riverside, California. In phase two of implementation, starting later in 2011, 91 additional areas will be added to the program. |
