Tê liệt là hậu quả của một số kiểu đứt quãng giữa hệ thần kinh trung ương (bộ não và tủy sống) và cơ thể. Đôi khi các nhà khoa học biết nguyên do gây nên sự đứt quãng, ví dụ như trường hợp chấn thương, theo đó các tế bào thần kinh bị hạ gục bởi một số lực tác động trực tiếp từ bên ngoài. Trong nhiều trường hợp khác, kể cả những bệnh tật ví dụ như đa xơ cứng hoặc viêm tủy ngang, tình trạng suy yếu của hệ thần kinh bắt nguồn ngay từ bên trong và điều này làm cho việc chẩn đoán và điều trị rất phức tạp.

Chương trình nghiên cứu y sinh học hy vọng có thể vén mở được những tấm màn bí mật của chứng bệnh và chấn thương của hệ thần kinh và trả lại cho những người bị tàn tật càng nhiều chức năng bao nhiêu càng tốt bấy nhiêu. Tuy nhiên việc này nói thì dễ nhưng làm thì rất khó.

Trước kia, ý niệm về "phương pháp chữa trị" bệnh tổn thương tủy sống hoặc những bệnh lý tê liệt khác còn chưa xuất hiện. Người ta nghĩ đơn giản rằng không thể sửa chữa được hệ thần kinh trung ương. Chỉ một vài nhà khoa học đã dành cả sự nghiệp của mình để nghiên cứu những điều mà người ta cho là một lĩnh vực nghiên cứu bế tắc. Nhưng nhiều năm đã trôi qua và mọi thứ đã thay đổi.

Lĩnh vực khoa học thần kinh hồi phục đang phát triển mạnh mẽ bằng khả năng tiềm tàng và sự kỳ vọng. Giờ đây có nhiều nhà khoa học tập trung vào nghiên cứu sự hoạt động khác thường của tủy sống và bộ não hơn bất cứ thời điểm nào trong lịch sử. Ngay cả những nhà nghiên cứu bảo thủ nhất cũng không còn giữ khư khư quan điểm rằng không thể chữa trị được hệ thần kinh bị bệnh hoặc hư hại.

Những manh mối ngày càng hiện ra. Các cuộc nghiên cứu lâm sàng để tìm ra những liệu pháp và phương pháp điều trị đổi mới sẽ tăng lên đều đều trong những năm tới.

Kiến thức của chúng ta về bộ não và tủy sống đã vượt xa những gì mà chúng ta đã nghĩ chỉ một vài năm trước đây, tuy nhiên như thế vẫn là chưa đủ. Giới khoa học cần phải có nhiều khám phá hơn nữa để đảm bảo tính an toàn và hiệu quả của các phương pháp điều trị.
