ギラン・バレー症候群 / Guillain-Barré Syndrome

ギラン・バレー症候群は、身体の免疫系が、末梢神経系を攻撃する障害です。この障害に見られる最初の症状は、脚における、さまざまな程度の衰弱や刺すような痛みです。衰弱や痛感異常は、腕や上半身まで広がることがあります。

こうした症状の程度が悪化し、最後には筋肉がまったく使い物にならず、患者は、医学的緊急状態と考えられる完全な麻痺になります。しばしば、患者は、呼吸を補助するために人工呼吸器を使用しなければならないこともあります。

しかし、一部の患者で多少の衰弱は残ることはありますが、ほとんどの患者は、最も重症なギラン・バレー症候群からも回復することができます。

ギラン・バレー症候群はめったに起こりません。この疾病は、通常、患者が呼吸器や胃腸系統のウィルス感染症症状を発症した後、数日ないし数週間で発症します。時には、手術やワクチン接種によって誘発されることもあります。障害は数時間から数日で現われますが、最長で3～4週間かかることもあります。

ギラン・バレー症候群を発症する人と発症しない人がいる理由、および、何がこの疾病を誘発するかについては、判明していません。判明しているのは、身体の免疫系が自分の身体を攻撃し始めて、いわゆる自己免疫疾患を誘発するということです。

ギラン・バレー症候群の治療法はまだ知られていませんが、ほとんどの患者で、症状を軽減し回復を加速させる治療法を施すことができます。この疾病の合併症を治療するには多くの方法があります。現在、血漿交換法や免疫グロブリンを大量に投与する療法が採用されています。

現在、免疫系関連の研究を参照して、どんな細胞が神経系に対する攻撃を起こす元となるかを発見しようという研究が進められています。
