麻痺を持つ人の多くにとって（手や腕の機能が非常に制限されている人さえも）、車を運転することが現実的なものになってきました。広範囲の運転機器や車両の改造法が入手できるようになったからです。

麻痺を持つ人が車の運転を習う最初のステップは、有資格運転教習教官に、車両にどんな設定や特殊改造や運転装置を取り付けたらよいかを評価してもらうことです。この評価には、視力検査、筋力や身体の柔軟性や動きの範囲、協調や反応時間、判断力、補助機器を使用した運転能力などの評価が含まれます。

有資格評価者を見つけるには、最寄のリハビリテーションセンターや運転者リハビリテーション専門家協会（ADED、下記を参照）にお問い合わせください。これらの団体には、全国の有資格評価者のリストが記録されています。

運転免許証を取得するには、路上テストを受けるために必要な仮免許証または運転免許証が必要です。障害を持つ人であっても、仮免許証や運転免許証の申請は拒否されませんが、補助機器の使用に応じて、免許に制限が課されることがあります。

評価の結果が合格であったら、次に、能力やニーズに最適なのはどんな車両であるか考えなければなりません。改造を行う車両を選択する際には、有資格評価者や有資格車両改造ディーラーの協力が必要です。車両を選択する際や、自分が既に所有している車両を改造する際には、次の設問が役立つことがあります。

必要な補助機器を使用するためにはバンを必要とするか。それとも乗用車で十分か（車を運転する際に車椅子が必要か、それとも、自分で車のシートに移動できるか。自分で車のシートに移動できる場合には、車両選択の幅がかなり広くなります。）

車両に、必要な機器を収納することができるか。

車両を改造した後で、他の乗員が座るためのスペースが残っているか。

自宅や勤務先に、車椅子や歩行器を出し入れするための十分な駐車スペースがあるか。

車両や補助機器や改造に要する費用を第3者が支払う場合、カバー範囲に制限はあるか。購入する前に、必ず保険会社から、何が支払われるかを記載した文書を入手しておいてください。

車両改造費には大きな幅があります。補助機器による改造が行われている新車の価格は2万ドルないし8万ドルです。ですから、国や保険会社からの経済的補助にはどんなものがあるかを調べておく価値があります。

障害の原因や状況によっては、車両改造費の一部または全額を支払うプログラムを受けることができます。最寄の作業リハビリテーション機関や職業訓練サービスを提供する機関にお問い合わせください。退役軍人の場合は退役軍人省に問い合わせることもできます。それ以外にも、次の点を考慮してください。

障害者擁護非営利団体の多くは、補助機器購入資金を補助する交付金プログラムを実施しています。
個人健康保険や労働補償を有している場合、補助機器の購入費や車両改造費がカバーされることがあります。保険会社にお問い合わせください。
多くのメーカーでは、改造車に対して、返金プランや払い戻しプランを有しています。
州によっては、医師の処方箋があれば、補助機器の購入の際に消費税が免除されることがあります。

所得税申告の際に減税される可能性があります。補助機器購入費用が医療費控除の対象になるか否かについては、会計士とご相談ください。

車両を改造する有資格ディーラーを見つけましょう。ディーラーに質問をし、また、そのディーラーに関する評判や、そのディーラーを利用した人の意見を聞きましょう。そのディーラーは評価者と一緒に仕事をしているか。購入する前に車両を点検してくれるか。医師や運転評価専門家の処方箋を必要とするか。機器の使用法に関するトレーニングをしてくれるか。機器の整備をしてくれるか。費用はいくらか。作業が終了するまでに要する時間はどのくらいか。保証はあるか。
