기얀 바레 증후군

기얀 바레 증후군은 신체의 면역계가 말초 신경계 부분을 공격하는 질병이다. 이 질병의 시초의 증상으로는 다양한 정도의 다리 약화나 욱신거림이 있다. 종종 이러한 약화나 비정상적인 감각은 보통 팔이나 신체 상부로 퍼져나간다.

이러한 증세들은 환자의 신체가 완전히 마비되거나 근육을 전혀 사용 불가능할때까지 급격히 증가하는데 이는 의학적 비상상태라고 여겨질 수 있겠다. 흔히 환자는 호흡보조를 받기위해 인공 호흡기에 의지한다.

몇몇은 회복후 어느정도의 약소를 지니지만 거의 모든 환자들이 심지어 가장 심각한 기얀 바레 증후군으로부터도 회복을 한다.

기얀 바레 증후군은 아주 드물다. 이는 보통 호흡계이나 위장계의 바이러스 감염 증세 발병 몇일 또는 몇주 후에 일어난다. 가끔 수술이나 백신접종이 이 증후군을 자극하기도 한다. 이 질병은 몇시간이나 몇일에 걸쳐 발달하고, 3-4주까지 걸릴수도 있다.

기얀 바레가 왜 어떤 사람들을 공격하고 다른사람들은 공격하지 않는지, 무엇이 이병의 발병을 유래하는지는 불명이다. 과학자들이 아는 바는 이는 자기면역계의 질병으로 신체의 면역계가 신체 자체를 공격하기 시작한다는 점이다.

기얀 바레 증후군을 위한 알려진 치료법은 없지만 요법시행이 병의 괴로움을 덜고 거의 모든 환자의 회복을 가속화시킨다. 또한 이 병의 합병증을 치료하는 방법들도 있다. 최근에 혈장 교환법과 면역 글로불린의 과량투입 요법이 사용되고 있다.

과학자들은 어떤 세포가 신경계를 공격하는 역할을 하는지 찾아내기위해 면역계의 작용을 관찰하고 있다.
