성적 정체감은 인간의 성격을 에워싸는 중요한 구성요소이다. 성은 자신에대해 어떻게 느끼고 자신이 다른사람들과 어떻게 관계를 짓거나, 다른사람들이 자신과 어떻게 관계를 짓는가를 아는데 필수적 역할을 한다.

마비는 육체적 기능, 느낌, 반응 변화를 포함해 확실히 개인의 성생활에 영향을 끼친다. 자아상이 훼손될수도 있다. 환자들은 성생활을 다시 할 수있을지, 이성의 흥미를 끌수있을지, 동반자가 자신과 머물지, 자식을 가질수 있을지 궁금해한다.

성생활의 종류는 다양한 반면 마비의 정도를 불문하고 육체적매력이나 성교의 방법에는 실현가능한 기대가 있다. 마비환자의 성적 만족은 가능하다. 마비된 여성은 임신도 가능하다. 마비된 남성이 자식을 얻을수도 있다. 마비환자들도 사랑이 가득차고 지속되는 관계를 가질 수 있다는 것이다.

한 개인의 성적 정체감을 성공적으로 재정의 하는데의 열쇠는 실험과 열린 의사소통에 있다. 이는 성기능과 반응에 관련된 인체와 생리를 이해하는데 도움을 준다. 또한 이는 의료계 전문가 또는 상담가들이 최적의 선택권을 조언하는데 도움을 준다.
