뇌성 마비 연구

생물 의학연구는 뇌성마비 예방에과 보다 나은 진단 및 치료에 기여하였다. 70%의 뇌성마비가 출생전에 발생한다; 20%는 출산 시 발생한다; 그리고 10%는 생후 2년 내에 일어난다. 위험요인은 이러한 점을 감안하여 확인되였고, 자궁내 감염, 뇌출혈, 발작, 호흡 및 순환 문제, 뇌졸증, 외상 등 태아의 뇌 손상 등이 그 요인들이다. 풍진(독일 홍역)이나 황달 등 특정 병태는 뇌성마비의 원인으로 알려져 있다; 현재 이 병태를 예방하거나 치료가 가능하다.

저체중의 신생아가 정상체중의 신생아보다 뇌성마비를 일으킬 확률이 100배에 다른다. 과학자들은 담배, 주류, 처방전 약물(예-항우울증약) 환경 독소를 포함한 뇌성바미 위험 요인을 저하하는 방법들을 탐색중이다.

사이토킨의 역할 또한 주된 연구 부분이다. 사이토킨은 세포나 다른 조직의 물질대사를 조절하는 화학 메세지로 그의 활동에 영향을 미친다 (예- 활성 면역계 세포). 사이토킨은 박테리아 침입, 낮은 산소율(빈혈), 저혈압(허혈)에 대해 반응하여 방출되어 뇌손상을 초래하는 역할을 한다; 이에 대한 초기발견은 신생아의 뇌손상을 예방하는데 중요하다.

Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation (CDRF)Offers an online tutorial about spinal cord injury, underscoring the promise of research: you must no longer accept that you will be paralyzed for the rest of your life. The tutorial explains what happens to the spinal cord when injured and outlines the latest developments in the search for a cure.
