Reeve Foundation suffered a great loss with the passing of a dear friend

Arnie Snider

On Friday, January 3, 2014, the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation suffered a great loss with the passing of a dear friend, Arnie Snider. A visionary and influential leader, Arnie was appointed as the Vice Chairman of the Reeve Foundation Board of Directors due to his stellar intellect and big heart for humanitarian efforts.

Even with a decorated career, he regarded his work for the Reeve Foundation and other philanthropic organizations as the most rewarding and enriching experiences of his life.

What made Arnie truly unique was that he had no personal connection to spinal cord injuries. He was appointed to the board in 2005 at the suggestion of Jim Welch who trusted Arnie's strategic acumen and business savvy.

The reason that Arnie wanted to lock arms with the Reeve Foundation boiled down to one concept -- a moral imperative to change the world and evolve the quality of life for millions of people living with spinal cord injuries. He saw the opportunity to make a transformational difference for the paralysis community and worked tirelessly to safeguard the growth of the Foundation.

When I spoke with Reeve staff and board members, we all shared the same sentiment and insights about Arnie's contribution to the organization. He was instrumental in the wake of Christopher and Dana Reeve's passing, pioneering new initiatives such as epidural stimulation and rallying for advanced rehabilitative methods through the NeuroRecovery Network® (NRN).

However, beyond committing his time and effort to grow the organization, he also acted as a "North Star" -- a compass to keep us moving forward. And due to his direction and unwavering courage, we are at the precipice of greatness to advance the care of spinal cord injuries and discover cures for paralysis.

His loss is immeasurable but I am certain that Arnie would want us to harness his spirit and courage to fuel our mission. He lifted us up after the loss of Dana and Christopher and we must forge ahead with his vision shaping our future.

In Arnie's honor, let's resolve to move the Reeve Foundation mission forward and transform the lives of millions. His legacy will live on through our work and achievements. Our thoughts are with his wife, Katherine, as well as their children and the entire Snider family.
