SUMMER 2021 LIFEGUARDSWhat inspired you to Join Team Reeve?

The Waterford Recreation and Parks Department has been fortunate in receiving two grants from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. The two grants we received were for individuals to be able to access our town beach. The first year we received a grant, we purchased two beach wheelchairs. These chairs were instrumental for individuals who have disabilities to be able to get to the water, in the water and be able to enjoy the solitude of the beach.

The second grant that we received and put into place this past May was to purchase Mobi Mats that made it easier for individuals to walk to the beach as well as push wheelchairs to the beach. Anyone with instability problems was also treated to smooth grounds and abilities to enjoy the beach. These Mobi Mats were a huge benefit to people we did not even know had disabilities.

Since the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation has been so good to the Town of Waterford, I was able to get some of my friends and some of our lifeguards to participate.

What are you doing to train for the 5k?

Since we have a beach and lifeguards, we do weekly training. Therefore, we added to their routine by including a quarter-mile swim each week until September. After the beach closed, the lifeguards all swam their 5k at once and completed their portion of the challenge.

Leona and Kerry- Part of the Flower Cap Gals. They wear the caps so they can see each other in the ocean.

Now, of course, I had to start training to participate, as did our Lifeguard Supervisor, the Office Clerk/Typist and Recreation Director. The Recreation Director and the Clerk Typist did walk, the lifeguard supervisor and I have been swimming. She swims a couple of miles a day, where I started swimming a quarter to half mile a day to do the 5k.

How do you plan to complete the virtual 5k?

Our lifeguards finished on Labor Day. My team of colleagues and I planned on finishing the virtual 5k the week before the event took place. We finished the 5k on September 22 by swimming in the ocean.

There is still time to register for the Reeve Run & Roll and join my team!
