Reeve Summit Session Demystifies Medical Fundraising to Help Families Avoid Financial Crisis

As healthcare costs rise and insurance gaps leave families with astronomical bills, medical fundraising has become a last resort for many. The healthcare crowdfund has become especially ubiquitous in America, where 50 million people have contributed to medical fundraisers.

“Safe and Supportive Fundraising,” a virtual workshop at the Reeve Summit 2021, aims to help people navigate this new world.

Millions of Americans Crowdfund to Cover the Medical Bills that Health Insurance Doesn’t

Medical fundraising is particularly relevant to catastrophic illness or injury, which too often leads to a financial crisis. Medical bills are the leading cause of bankruptcy in America. In response, personal crowdfunding campaigns have increased exponentially.

A 2020 survey by NORC at the University of Chicago found that an estimated 8 million Americans had started a medical campaign for themselves or someone in their household. More than 12 million had started a campaign for someone else.

Medical Fundraising Can Help Prevent a Health Crisis from Becoming a Financial Crisis

“Even with insurance, a health crisis can become a financial crisis,” says Sonny Mullen, Outreach Manager for Help Hope Live. The nonprofit organization helps people living with catastrophic injuries and illnesses safely and responsibly fundraise for their unmet medical expenses and related costs.

For 37 years, Help Hope Live has been showing clients and families how to bring together a network of relatives, friends, and neighbors in fundraising efforts to help cover the costs of uncovered medical expenses.
